One of the first things that you can do to treat any problem is identify the causes. The same is the case with childhood obesity. If you want your child to get rid of that excess fat, it is important that you understand the causes of childhood obesity in the first place. Heredity
Like other health conditions, obesity can also be inherited from parents. If the parents of the child or anyone else in the family are obese or suffering from health risks related to obesity, then it is likely that the child is also at risk. This is the only cause of obesity in children that is uncontrollable.

Lack of physical activity
For any child to have the ideal weight, it is important for him/her to indulge in some or the other kind of physical activity. Experts recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity for children. Since children do not like exercising, you can involve them in fun activities like playing any sport, swimming, cycling, or just going for a walk.

Wrong eating habits
Children are bound to put on weight if they are feeding on junk food. Foods such as burgers, pizzas, pastas, sodas contribute to weight gain. Also you should ensure that your child does not stick to any unhealthy eating habits such eating in the front of the television, binge eating, unhealthy snacking and the like. Instead, encourage your child to eat more of healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Sedentary lifestyle
This is perhaps the most common cause of obesity in children. Today, a majority of children lead a sedentary lifestyle. They are either sitting and studying or playing in front of their computer or watching television. This sedentary lifestyle also leads to excessive weight.

Environmental factors
The surrounding environment and lifestyle of a child may also be an important cause of obesity. If you take your child too often to eat out then it is obvious that he or she will put on extra weight. Overexposure to commercials that popularize sodas and other junk food may also encourage your child to switch to such unhealthy foods.

Socioeconomic status
At times, poor income of the family may also attribute to child obesity. Families with low income are unable to provide the right kind of diet and nutrition to their children. As a result, children are forced to binge on whatever comes their way. Further on, due to lack of financial resources children are also unable to indulge in any kind of recreational facilities such as any sports and pile on extra fat.
